Santa\nClarita begins testing the effectiveness of installing Room Alert environment\nmonitors throughout the city to monitor traffic signal and crossing gate status\nto improve commute times and reduce repair costs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 17, 2019 Warren, RI \u2013 AVTECH Software<\/strong> (AVTECH) is excited to announce\nthat the Traffic and Transportation Planning Division in Santa Clarita,\nCalifornia has selected Room Alert for its new innovative traffic control pilot\nprogram. The program aims to improve commutes and reduce traffic congestion by\nmonitoring traffic signals for malfunctions due to overheating and power loss\nas well as inoperable railroad gates that cause traffic delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Santa Clarita Traffic and\nTransportation Planning Division first approached AVTECH to purchase Room Alert\nmonitors and sensors to provide temperature monitoring after an HVAC failure in\na secure facility caused high heat concerns. Once Room Alert was installed, the\ncity recognized the advanced capabilities of the monitors could provide a wealth\nof monitoring solutions across the region to help improve traffic flow and\nreduce maintenance costs on the almost 200 traffic signals across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur traffic signal\nenclosures could reach internal temperatures up to 140 degrees during the\nsummer and heat waves,\u201d noted Cesar Romo, Traffic Signal System Administrator\nfor the City of Santa Clarita. \u201cThe average cost to replace an enclosure\ndamaged by high heat could reach $4,000. Monitoring the enclosures to ensure they\nare not overheating or losing power will reduce repair costs. Room Alert will\nalso help avoid situations where the signals stop working due to power loss or\noverheating, which will help to improve traffic flow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santa Clarita also recognized\nhow Room Alert could help prevent traffic problems due to malfunctioning\nrailroad crossing gates by sending an alert when Room Alert monitors detect the\ngates are closed longer than normal. In the past when crossing gates became\nstuck or malfunctioned, the Traffic and Transportation Division would not get\nnotified for at least 45-60 minutes after traffic problems began. With Room Alert\nproactively monitoring the gates, notification arrives via automated email and\ntext message within 5 minutes, drastically reducing the time to get the gate re-opened\nand improving traffic flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
