In order for Device ManageR to alert you when your Axis camera detects motion, you must first configure your camera to notify Device ManageR.<\/p>\n

Once you’ve configured your camera with a motion event, your camera will send notifications to Device ManageR over TCP port 8085 when it detects motion.<\/div><\/div>\n

Before you start<\/h3>\n
\n
<\/span>Use Internet Explorer (IE) to view your camera.<\/div>
\n

While most pages of the camera’s web interface display correctly in other browsers, some camera features that you’ll need, such as the Motion Detection window or the Video Motion Detection\u00a0settings page, can’t be properly viewed or configured without Internet Explorer. (Also, it does have to be IE, not Edge.)<\/p>\n

When you open your camera’s web interface in IE, you may get this message: ‘This webpage wants to run the following ad on: “AXIS Media Control” from “Axis Communications AB”.’ Select Allow<\/strong> to allow the installation.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Check your camera's firmware version.<\/div>
\n

Menu options are different in pre-v5.40 firmware than they are in v5.40 and higher; additionally, the type of motion detection you have available (built-in or Video Motion Detection) depends on your firmware version.<\/p>\n

Configuring a Motion Event on an Axis Camera<\/h3>\n
\n
<\/span>Step 1: Configure a Recipient \/ Event Server.<\/div>
\n

The menu options in cameras with\u00a0firmware version 5.40 and higher are different than those with pre-5.40 firmware. If you have 5.40+, you’ll create a Recipient<\/em>. If you have firmware below 5.40, you’ll create an Event Server<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Select the tab below that corresponds to your firmware version\u00a0to view the steps you should take.<\/p>\n

Firmware 5.40+<\/span>Pre-5.40 Firmware<\/span><\/div>
\n

These instructions apply to Axis camera version 5.40 and higher.<\/h4>\n

1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup<\/em>\u00a0page, select Events<\/strong>\u00a0in the navigation bar to the left.<\/p>\n

2. In the window that opens, select Recipients<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. Select Add<\/strong>. Here you’re going to enter your instance of Device ManageR to receive TCP notifications:<\/p>\n

– In Name<\/em>, enter a name for your recipient. In our example, we’re entering ‘ADM 192.168.2.71.’<\/p>\n

– In Type<\/em>, select TCP<\/strong> from the drop-down menu.<\/p>\n

– In Network Address<\/em>, enter the IP address of Device ManageR’s host system.<\/p>\n

– In Port Number<\/em>, enter ‘8085.’<\/p>\n

– Select Test<\/strong> to test the connection.<\/p>\n

You should see a Connection successful<\/em> message. Select OK<\/strong> to dismiss it.<\/p>\n

If your connection test fails, you may need to open inbound TCP port 8085 in the firewall on Device ManageR’s host system.<\/p>\n

– Finally, select OK<\/strong> to save your new recipient.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Your recipient will now appear in the Recipients<\/em>\u00a0List<\/em>, and you can choose it later when you set up your Action Rule.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

These instructions apply to Axis camera firmware below version 5.40.<\/h4>\n

1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup<\/em>\u00a0page, select Event Config<\/strong>\u00a0in the navigation bar to the left.<\/p>\n

2. In the window that opens, select Event Servers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. Select Add TCP<\/strong>. Here you’re going to enter your instance of Device ManageR to receive TCP notifications:<\/p>\n

– In Name<\/em>, enter a name for your event server. In our example, we’re entering ‘ADM 192.168.2.71.’<\/p>\n

– In Network Address<\/em>, enter the IP address of Device ManageR’s host system.<\/p>\n

– In Port Number<\/em>, enter ‘8085.’<\/p>\n

– Select Test<\/strong> to test the connection.<\/p>\n

You should see a Connection successful<\/em> message. Select OK<\/strong> to dismiss it.<\/p>\n

Your event server\u00a0will now appear in the Event Servers<\/em>\u00a0List<\/em>, and you can choose it later when you set up your Event Type.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

<\/span>Step 2: Configure Video Motion Detection settings \/ a Motion Detection window.<\/div>
\n

Depending on the firmware version of your Axis camera, you may set up a motion event on the camera’s built-in motion detection or on the Video Motion Detection\u00a0application. Note that Axis is deprecating built-in motion detection and replacing it with the Video Motion Detection application.<\/p>\n

Firmware 5.80 and higher<\/h4>\n

5.80+ has only Video Motion Detection available.* This firmware\u00a0automatically installs the Video Motion Detection application on your camera and removes built-in motion detection.<\/p>\n

*An exception to this would be if you had a motion detection event already set up on built-in motion detection and then upgraded to 5.80 or higher. In that case, you would still have built-in motion detection available; however, you would not be able to configure the Motion Detection window, which would still be removed.<\/em><\/p>\n

Firmware from 5.40 to pre-5.80<\/h4>\n

5.40 to pre-5.80 can have both built-in motion detection and Video Motion Detection available. (You may manually install Video Motion Detection starting with 5.40.) Even though both built-in and Video Motion Detection may be available on the camera, you should use only one of them.<\/p>\n

Firmware prior to 5.40<\/h4>\n

Pre-5.40 firmware has\u00a0only built-in motion detection available.<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0the tab below that matches the type of motion detection you wish to use.<\/h5>\n
Video Motion Detection<\/span>Built-in Motion Detection<\/span><\/div>
\n

These instructions apply to Video Motion Detection settings.<\/h4>\n

You may configure\u00a0Axis Video Motion Detection application settings or simply leave them at defaults. To view or configure them:<\/p>\n

1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup<\/em>\u00a0page, navigate to\u00a0Applications<\/strong>\u2192Motion Detection<\/strong> in the navigation bar to the left.<\/p>\n

2. In Application Settings<\/em>, select\u00a0Axis Video Motion Detection settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Settings for Video Motion Detection 3 (version 3.2) are shown here at their defaults. Your settings may differ depending on the version of Video Motion Detection you have installed.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

3. Select the question mark\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0icon in your camera’s web interface for information about the settings that are available. You may also find the Video Motion Detection manual on Axis’ website here: Axis Video Motion Detection (Axis website)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4. If you make any changes, be sure to select Save<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Select Close<\/strong> to dismiss the window.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

These instructions apply to the camera’s built-in Motion Detection.<\/h4>\n

If you’re using built-in Motion Detection, you must configure a Motion Detection window\u00a0in order to later set up your Action Rule or Event Type.<\/p>\n

1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup<\/em>\u00a0page:<\/p>\n

– Navigate to\u00a0Detectors\u2192Motion Detection<\/strong>\u00a0in cameras with firmware versions 5.40\u00a0to pre-5.80.<\/p>\n

or<\/p>\n

– Navigate to Event Config\u2192Motion Detection<\/strong>\u00a0in cameras with firmware below 5.40.<\/p>\n

2. When you attempt to\u00a0view the Motion Detection window, you may see an error message. If you do\u2014or if you otherwise cannot properly view the window\u2014you’ll need to add your camera’s IP address to IE’s Compatibility View settings:<\/p>\n

– In Internet Explorer, select Tools<\/strong> from IE’s\u00a0menu at the top of the page.<\/p>\n

– Then select Compatibility View settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

– In Compatibility View Settings <\/em>dialog box, type the IP address of your camera in Add this website<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

– Then select Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

– Finally, select Close<\/strong> to dismiss the dialog box.\u00a0You should then be able to see the Motion Detection window and settings.<\/p>\n

3. In the\u00a0Motion Detection<\/em> window, leave Configure Included Windows<\/strong> selected, which is the default.<\/p>\n

4. In Windows Name<\/em>, select New<\/strong>. A new ‘default window’ will appear.<\/p>\n

5. Use your mouse to drag the window to the size and position you want it to be. In our example, we are sizing the window to match the entire image.<\/p>\n

6. In the ‘default window’ line item, name your window. In our example, we’re calling\u00a0it ‘Office Door – Motion Detection Window.’<\/p>\n

7. Your window comes with a default Object Size<\/em> (15), History<\/em> (90) and Sensitivity<\/em> (90). You may leave the default values, or choose your own using the slider. In our example, we’ve left the defaults for Object Size<\/em> and History<\/em>, but increased the Sensitivity<\/em> to 95.<\/p>\n

For more information about the features of the Motion Detection window, select the question mark <\/a>\u00a0icon in your camera’s web interface.<\/em><\/p>\n

8. Then select Save<\/strong> to save your motion detection window.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Step 3: Configure Your Action Rule \/ Event Type.<\/div>
\n

The menu options in cameras with\u00a0firmware version 5.40 and higher are different than those with pre-5.40 firmware. If you have 5.40+, you’ll create an\u00a0Action Rule<\/em>. If you have firmware below 5.40, you’ll create an Event Type<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The menu options for your Action Rule in firmware versions 5.40+ also differ according to whether you’re using\u00a0built-in motion detection or Video Motion Detection (VMD).<\/p>\n

Select the tab below that corresponds to your firmware version \/ motion detection type to view the steps you should take.<\/p>\n

5.40+ (VMD)<\/span>5.40+ (Built-in Motion Detection)<\/span>Pre-5.40 Firmware<\/span><\/div>

These instructions apply to Axis camera firmware\u00a0versions 5.40 and higher\u00a0when you’re using the Video Motion Detection application.<\/h4>\n

Note that the menu options you see may differ slightly from those below, depending on your firmware version.<\/em><\/p>\n

1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup<\/em>\u00a0page, navigate to Events<\/strong>\u2192Action Rules <\/strong>\u00a0in the navigation bar to the left.<\/p>\n

2. In the window that appears, select Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. In the General<\/em> section, make sure Enable rule<\/strong> is selected.<\/p>\n

4. In Name<\/em>, enter a name for the rule. We’re calling ours ‘Notify ADM – Motion.’<\/p>\n

5. In Trigger<\/em>, select Applications.<\/b><\/p>\n

6. Leave Start condition only<\/strong> at the default, unchecked.<\/p>\n

7. In the drop down-menu that appears, select VMD 3 <\/strong>or VideoMotionDetection\u00a0<\/strong>depending on which Video Motion Detection\u00a0version you have installed. (It may already be selected for you.)<\/p>\n

8. In Active<\/em> (or\u00a0Motion Detected)<\/em>, leave the default, Yes<\/strong>, selected.<\/p>\n

9. In Schedule<\/em>, select Always (No Schedule)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

10. Leave Additional conditions<\/em> blank, which is the default.<\/p>\n

11. In Wait at least<\/em>, enter 00:00:02.<\/p>\n

12. In Type<\/em>, select Send Notification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

13. In the drop-down menu that appears, select the recipient you made earlier.<\/p>\n

14. In Message<\/em>, enter “Motion Detected.” (This message will appear in Device ManageR’s logs and can assist with troubleshooting.)<\/p>\n

15. Leave Send notification continuously while rule is active<\/strong> at the default, unchecked.<\/p>\n

16. Then select OK<\/strong> to save your new rule.<\/p>\n

Your Action Rule will now appear in your Action Rule List<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

These instructions apply to Axis camera firmware\u00a0versions 5.40 to pre-5.80 when you’re using the camera’s built-in motion detection.<\/h4>\n

1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup<\/em>\u00a0page, navigate to Events<\/strong>\u2192Action Rules <\/strong>\u00a0in the navigation bar to the left.<\/p>\n

2. In the window that appears, select Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. In the General<\/em> section, select\u00a0Enable rule<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4. In Name<\/em>, enter a name for the rule. We’re calling ours ‘Notify ADM – Motion.’<\/p>\n

5. In Trigger<\/em>, select Detectors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

6. Then select Motion Detection<\/strong> from the new drop-down menu that appears.<\/p>\n

7. The motion window you created in the previous step should automatically get selected beneath that.<\/p>\n

8. In Motion, ensure that Yes<\/strong> is selected.<\/p>\n

9. In Schedule, select Always (No Schedule) <\/strong>from the drop-down menu.<\/p>\n

10. Select Additional conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

11. In Wait at least<\/em>, enter 00:00:02.<\/p>\n

12. In Type<\/em>, select Send Notification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

13. In the drop-down menu that appears, select the recipient you made in the previous step.<\/p>\n

15. In Send notifications continuously while rule is active<\/em>, leave the default, unchecked.<\/p>\n

16. Then select OK<\/strong> to save your new rule.<\/p>\n

Your Action Rule will now appear in your Action Rule List<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

These instructions apply to Axis camera firmware below 5.40.<\/h4>\n

1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup page, navigate to Event Config\u2192Event Types\u00a0<\/strong>in the navigation bar to the left.<\/p>\n

2. In the window that appears, select Add Triggered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. In the General<\/em> section, in Name<\/em>, enter a name for your event. We’re calling ours ‘Notify ADM – Motion.’<\/p>\n

4. In priority, leave the default, Normal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. In Set min time interval between triggers<\/em>, enter 00:00:02.<\/p>\n

6. In Respond to Trigger<\/em>, leave Always<\/strong> selected.<\/p>\n

7. In Triggered by<\/em>, select Motion detection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

8. In When Triggered<\/em>, select Send TCP notification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

9. In Send to<\/em>, select the Event Server you made in the previous step. In our example, we’re selecting ADM 192.168.2.71.<\/p>\n

10. In Message<\/em>, enter ‘Motion Detected.’ (This message will appear in Device ManageR’s logs and can assist with troubleshooting.)<\/p>\n

11. In Send notifications continuously while event is active<\/em>, leave the default, unchecked.<\/p>\n

12. Then select OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
