What many businesses don\u2019t protect against is water damage. In fact, properties are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2010\/09\/17\/113337.htm\" target=\"_blank\">10 times more likely<\/a> to suffer from water damage than they are from fire damage.<\/p>\n<p>Water damage can come from a variety of sources, and while not all of them may be applicable in every situation, businesses should nonetheless have some sort of water detection as part of their business continuity plan.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Flood monitoring<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/high-water-876580_1280.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7277\" src=\"http:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/high-water-876580_1280-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Flood waters\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/high-water-876580_1280-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/high-water-876580_1280-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/high-water-876580_1280-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/high-water-876580_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Floods are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stellaradjusting.com\/top-10-florida-water-damage-and-flood-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\">number one natural disaster<\/a> here in the United States, and statistics show that flood and extreme weather events heavily affect the US along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/269652\/countries-with-the-most-natural-disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\">China, Japan, and the Philippines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many businesses that aren\u2019t located near large bodies of water tend to forget about flood damage, however it\u2019s important to remember that water damage from flooding isn\u2019t restricted to just those in coastal areas. Overflowing rivers, extreme precipitation, water main breaks, internal plumbing failures and even melting snow can all cause water damage from flooding.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, sewer backup can cause flood damage as well. Sometimes this can be due to extreme weather situations where water damage can be anticipated, and sometimes it can be caused by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sherwoodparknews.com\/2017\/01\/13\/damage-unknown-on-school-water-main-break\" target=\"_blank\">local construction<\/a>, decaying public infrastructure, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnins.com\/resources\/personal\/features\/sewerbackup.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">invasive tree roots<\/a>. Having flood\/water sensors in basements and below-ground areas can help warn and protect businesses against water damage from sewer backup as well as naturally occurring flood conditions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Leak detection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Undetected leaks can cause just as much damage as a storm or flood. Even a small amount of water can promote unhealthy mold and mildew growth in the right conditions. On the good side, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplyjustice.com\/water-damage-statistics\" target=\"_blank\">93% of all water damage can be prevented<\/a>. On the bad side, far too few businesses, facility managers, and property owners are actually monitoring for leaks as they view fire as a more likely threat.<\/p>\n<p>Leak detection can come in many forms, including spot sensors as well as cable-style sensors that can be placed on the boundaries of a room or facility. Leak detection can even come in the form of humidity monitoring; the more humid a facility becomes over a short period of time, the more likely it is due to undetected water.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Easily avoid water damage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As we noted above, over 90% of major water damage can be easily avoided. Setting up proactive water and leak detection can help notify you immediately if water is detected anywhere in your building or facility. While you can\u2019t stop a storm from occurring, or a pipe in your building from leaking, you can stop that damage from becoming too expensive by monitoring for water.<\/p>\n<p>If your business is monitoring for smoke and fire as part of your business continuity plan, be sure to add water and leak detection as well.
