Using email alerting in PageR Enterprise (PageR) is one of the most common alert configurations chosen by users. The main reason for which is that alerts to multiple contacts are processed immediately when the alarm condition occurs. Also, Email-to-SMS (sending text messages to mobile devices via email) is widely supported by most if not all mobile device service providers. Following the proper sequence of steps when setting up email alerting can enable a much easier and efficient initial testing and setup of the application as a whole.

The 'Email' tab can be accessed in PageR by clicking the 'Options' screen button in the main 'Activity Log' window followed by selecting the 'Email' tab. On the 'Email' tab, the first field is titled 'Default notification email recipient'. The email address entered into this field is the default email for any alerts that do not have an email address Contact for alerting. The email address entered is also the email address that will receive test email alerts if the 'Send Test Mail' button is pressed. Before clicking the 'Send Test Email' button, always remember to click 'Accept' and save your configuration to the Registry using the 'Settings->Save Configuration To Registry' option from the 'Activity Log' window.

Enter your own corporate email address in the 'Default notification email recipient'. Check the 'Enable notification via email using SMTP' checkbox. Enter the DNS name, IP address or system name of your mail server in the 'Mail Server' field. Enter your own corporate email address in the 'Return Email' field. If your mail server requires authentication on SMTP emails, enter the email account username and password in the 'Profile/Identity' and 'Password' fields under the 'Enable notification via email using MAPI' section. DO NOT check the 'Enable notification via email using MAPI' checkbox if this is done. Click 'Accept' and save your configuration to the Registry. Open the 'Options' screen and navigate to the 'Email' tab. Click the 'Send Test Mail' button and note the information displayed in the 'Activity Log' window. If a processing error is experienced during the send mail attempt, it will appear beside an explanation point in a yellow circle. Please see below for a listing of the possible processing errors and what they mean.

No Valid Recipients Specified
The SMTP Relay configuration on your mail server does not allow anonymous (or authenticated if credentials were entered) SMTP Relay from the PageR Host System. To resolve this issue, enter authentication credentials as specified in the paragraph above. Be sure to save your configuration to the Registry after doing so and before clicking the 'Send Test Mail' button again. If this does not resolve the mail server issue, have your mail server administrator enable the IP address of the PageR Host System for SMTP Relay on the mail server.

Connection Refused
SMTP Relay is not enabled on your mail server, authentication credentials supplied are not correct or are not valid or the 'Return Mail' address is not valid on the mail server.

If processing errors are received when testing email and authentication credentials were not entered in the 'Profile/Identity' and 'Password' fields, try entering email account credentials that are valid on the mail server in these two fields but do not check the 'Enabled notification via email using MAPI' checkbox, save your configuration to the Registry and click the 'Send Test Mail' button again.

If no processing errors are received and the 'Options' screen comes to front, no errors were experienced on the email send, the mail server accepted the test email and an email should be arriving at the email address specified. If the test email is not received, either your mail server has filtered the message or an application installed on the PageR Host System is silently blocking the email send. The only application currently known to do a silent email block is an anti-virus application. If it can be confirmed that the anti-virus software is not silently blocking the email send attempt, the mail server access logs will have to be referenced for further information.

If the test email is received successfully, the next step in the testing process is to enter an out of domain email address in the 'Default notification email recipient' field. If the email address is not received after saving to the Registry and clicking the 'Send Test Mail' button, the SMTP Relay configuration can still be blocking the message. The instructions above can be followed for this instance as well.

If you are unable to resolve the issue, please feel free to contact us via Live Chat technical support or by sending an email to Support@AVTECH.com.
