The holidays are quickly approaching for many of us around the world. This is the time of year when many of us take vacation days to spend time with friends and family while we celebrate the season.
Businesses and organizations may run on smaller staffing levels, while some may shut down entirely for a week to let their employees have some down time.
In today’s global economy, while your staff may be at home enjoying some quality time with their families, your business is most likely still running. To do that, your customers may need access to data and information you may be storing on servers you host within your office data center or server room.
Even if your organization isn’t hosting databases or servers locally, when your staff is away from the office for a prolonged period there’s no one onsite who can spot potential issues, such as a water leak on the floor, or the temperature in your IT closet being far too hot.
Every commercial building and network has safeguards in place to protect it, and the employees who work in it. Smoke detectors and fire alarms help notify the fire department if a fire is detected, while firewalls help protect the network and data from intrusion and theft by hackers.
While these two above factors are critical to maintaining your organization’s uptime and revenue, there are many other concerns that can bring things to a screeching halt, especially if they occur over a long weekend or during a period when your staff is away from the office for a longer timeframe.
Here are some important statistics to consider over the holidays if you don’t currently have any proactive environment monitoring in place.
It’s likely that your organization would never consider not having a firewall in place to protect your sensitive data, nor would you turn off your building alarms and smoke detectors when you leave the office for a holiday break.
So that begs the question – if you monitor your network for intrusion, and your facility for smoke/fire, why wouldn’t you monitor for temperature, humidity, flood, power, and more? After all, they can cause just as much of a problem to your organization, and that’s a problem you cannot afford.
We wrote last year about ensuring your organization was protected over the holidays. Everything we wrote then still rings true today. Your organization should have proactive environment monitoring as an integral component in your business continuity plan for maximum coverage.
No one wants to get that text the day before returning to the office that notifies them of a major server outage… or the call from the fire department notifying them of a waterfall coming out of their building’s second floor windows… or the email from the building’s facility manager that a toilet line broke and flooded the data center on the floor below (and yes, unfortunately these are real-life situations we’ve seen).
Damages and downtime caused by environment factors left unattended during a holiday break can cost your organization tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue, equipment replacement, and building repairs. Insurance may help cover some of those costs… but wouldn’t it be better if you never had to worry about them in the first place?
The minimal investment in proactive environment monitoring, and a sensor array customized to your exact facility or data center, can help reduce the likelihood of downtime along with giving you and your staff peace of mind over the holiday season. You’ll know that your facility and critical assets are being monitored based on criteria that you have set, and if anything crosses a specific threshold such as temperature or humidity, or water is detected in sensitive areas you are monitoring, you and your staff will receive immediate text and email notifications.
Don’t let the unexpected ruin your staff’s holiday vacation. Give them peace of mind by investing in proactive environment monitoring to help protect your facility, data, and critical assets.
