The Differences Between Room Alert Monitoring Platforms

There are four main ways to monitor your Room Alert device:

  1. Through your RoomAlert.com Account
  2. Through Room Alert Manager software
  3. Through the Room Alert Monitor’s Built-in Web Interface
  4. Through a third-party SNMP program*

You may choose any of these methods—or use a combination of methods—to monitor your device. Each monitoring platform has its own benefits. Review the details in the tabs below to determine which option is best for you.

Different features are available at different account levels. Find the perfect account level for you here.

Similar to RoomAlert.com, you can use Room Alert Manager software to discover your Room Alert Monitors, configure alerts and export historical sensor data.

Room Alert Manager runs in the background as a Windows Service, constantly monitoring your devices and sensors. This software needs to be installed on a workstation that is always running in order to properly send alerts.

Room Alert Manager might be the best choice for you if:

  • You want a local software install.
  • You wish to create multi-threshold alerts.
  • You wish to configure automatic server shutdown actions.
  • When an alert triggers, you wish to notify members of your team in an escalation style.
    • For example, you wish to notify User A immediately, notify User B after 5 minutes, and notify User C after 10 minutes.
  • You wish to give different members of your team different levels of access to the software and/or restrict access to specific devices.

You may download Room Alert Manager through your Professional+ level account at RoomAlert.com.

Your Room Alert Monitor has a built-in web interface, which you can access by typing its IP address directly into your browser’s address bar.

Through the device’s web interface, you can:

  • View your sensor’s current readings.
  • Set up alerts to notify you by email, email-to-SMS or SNMP trap if a sensor passes a configured threshold.
  • Configure a light tower or relay action.

The Room Alert Monitor, itself, does not include many of the features available through RoomAlert.com or Room Alert Manager. Some customers choose to set up alerts at RoomAlert.com and configure back-up alerts on the device for redundancy purposes.

With Room Alert Manager, you may configure as many alerts as you’d like!

Check out the process here.

Take advantage of these advanced alerting features:

  • Create multi-threshold alerts, monitoring sensor readings from 1 or more devices at a time.
  • Set durations on alerts so that they only trigger if a condition is true for a set amount of time.
  • Escalate alert messages to different members of your team if an alert remains triggered.

Through your Room Alert Monitor’s built-in web interface, you can set individual thresholds for each sensor reading.

With a temperature sensor, for example, you can set one high and one low threshold.

Check out the process here.

One notification is sent when an alert is triggered and one notification is sent when the alert clears.

In both Room Alert Account and Room Alert Manager, you can graph historical data from multiple sensors and devices in one report.

Learn how to visually track trends in your environment, export historical sensor data to a CSV file, and more in our FAQ, How To Graph Your Room Alert Sensor Data.

In Room Alert Account, your access to historical data depends on your account level. For more information, please see this chart.

The Room Alert Monitor, itself, does not log historical data.

The device’s Status page shows current sensor readings.

For digital sensors, such as temperature and humidity sensors, the Status page also lists the highest and lowest values since the device last rebooted.

If you need to track historical data, please use RoomAlert.com or Room Alert Manager.

* This FAQ focuses on the first three monitoring methods listed at the top of the page. For information about using SNMP tools to monitor your device, please see How To Find SNMP Values For Room Alert Sensors.
