We are excited to announce that November brings many updates to our product line, including a completely redesigned web interface for all current Room Alert monitors. Our team has been hard at work creating this new interface from the ground up, and we are proud to now share that hard work with our customers and partners.
The existing web interface for Room Alert is based on a design from over 10 years ago. It’s incredible that we’ve been able to get this kind of mileage out of it, and thousands of our customers have used it for many years. It still ranks very high for overall clarity and ease of use, and its longevity is a testament to the design team that created and maintained it.
In recent years, many of our customers have moved to mobile devices as their primary interface for working with our Room Alert products. Although we could have updated the existing interface to be more mobile friendly, we instead took this as an opportunity to design a completely new interface that could carry Room Alert forward for the next decade. With this new opportunity, we focused on three primary goals for the new interface:
With more people using mobile devices as their primary interface to the web than ever before, it’s critical that all devices with a web interface work as well on small screens as they do on their larger counterparts. Room Alert’s new web interface now automatically scales and adjusts to the screen it is displayed on, automatically re-adjusting as needed to maintain a consistent look and feel. The result is a user experience that is consistent whether you are on an iPhone or a 30” cinema display. A full list of supported browsers is now shown on the Help page for convenience.
Although the previous web interface for Room Alert looked similar between different models, each was designed specifically for the Room Alert it was installed on. Each Room Alert has a unique mix of sensors and features, and the web interface for each was designed specifically for that model. This means that as changes were made to the web interface for one Room Alert, often that change was implemented again and again for each additional Room Alert model. This raised the likelihood of slight differences between models, and also caused the time between releases to be much longer because of duplicated efforts.
Going forward, all current Room Alert models share the exact same web interface. Under the hood, the web interface is now able to determine what type of device it is running on, then react accordingly to display the appropriate sensors and features. When new features are added or issues are fixed, they can be immediately included with all Room Alert models, accelerating our ability to provide timely firmware updates across the entire product line. This effort to consolidate the interface was so successful that we are now able to share a single Room Alert User Manual between the Room Alert 3E, Room Alert 4E, Room Alert 12E and Room Alert 32E/W.
Since GoToMyDevices launched at the beginning of 2015, it has grown dramatically and is the monitoring platform of choice for thousands of our customers around the world. We’re quickly approaching over 2 Billion recorded sensor values from over 15,000 devices. GoToMyDevices makes remote monitoring of Room Alert devices easier than ever with easy to configure email alerts, reports that allow users to compare sensors from multiple devices at multiple locations, maps that show Room Alert devices and their current status, and much more. An article highlighting some of these features can be found here.
Recent versions of Room Alert firmware have already been pushing data to GoToMyDevices, although it was not always clear how often this was happening. The new interface for Room Alert now has a section dedicated to GoToMyDevices that displays whether the push functionality is enabled, and information about the last data push from Room Alert to GoToMyDevices. Clicking the GoToMyDevices icon will take you directly to your account at GoToMyDevices.com, making it easier than ever to use Room Alert and GoToMyDevices together to expand your monitoring capabilities.
