Spring Cleaning for Your Environment Monitoring

Maintaining your organization’s uptime is an activity that never ends. Network monitoring along with your environment monitoring are tasks that are continually taking place. This is especially true when those emergencies occur at 2AM on a Sunday morning… and even though you’re woken up from a sound slumber, you’re thankful that you were alerted to a problem immediately.

With the change of seasons to Spring for many of us in the world, now is the perfect time to perform a little “Spring cleaning” on your monitoring plans. It’s also a good time to review your business continuity plans to make sure they’re up to date as well.

Just like you should be checking your smoke detectors at home, checking your environment monitoring at the office will help keep your company protected and productive by helping prevent unexpected outages.

Update your alerts

Every company should periodically revisit the alerts they’ve created to ensure they’re still up to date. Employees come and go from every organization, so it’s best to make sure all of your alerts are going to the correct people in your company.

It’s also a good idea to periodically check on the contact information in your alerts as well; it won’t do you any good if alerts are being sent to an incorrect email address or a former cell phone number that’s no longer in use.

Did your company install more Room Alert monitors, perhaps to monitor new buildings or new areas in your facility? Make sure that the alerts on those units are up to date to ensure you have the most comprehensive coverage possible.

Check your sensors

Make a point to check all of your sensors to make sure they are in the optimal location for monitoring. Sometimes equipment installation or network cabling work may displace or move some of your sensors. If this continues to happen, your sensors may end up in locations that don’t give you the most optimal readings. Be sure to perform a walk-through of your facility just to give your various sensors the “eyeball test” to confirm they’re all in the proper place.

Checking the cleanliness of your sensors will go a long way to making sure they’re providing the correct readings, as well as prolonging their life. For instance, if you have the Flood Sensor with Cable strung along the floor, make sure it’s not accumulating dirt or dust. Likewise with any outdoor sensors, such as the Digital Outdoor Temperature Sensor – being exposed to the elements can lead to dirt and accumulation that can cause false readings. Giving the sensor a quick wipedown can help provide optimal readings.

Customers who use sensors in extreme environments, such as freezers and water tanks, should also periodically inspect the sensors for any external accumulation and wipe them down if necessary.

Be ready for unsettled weather

Spring is when heavy rains can wreak havoc with battered roofs and windows that stood up to winter storms. Quickly melting snow can also introduce water into your facility unexpectedly.

Make sure that your alerts are up to date, and your Room Alert monitors and sensors are properly placed within your facility to ensure the best coverage. Don’t let environment factors such as temperature, humidity, flood, power, or smoke cost your company revenue and productivity this spring! Remember, 30% of outages are environment-related, so stay protected with Room Alert monitors, RoomAlert.com, and Device ManageR from AVTECH.
