Last week we introduced our new Active Power Sensor, which provides the power status of nearly any AC-powered electrical device, along with a temperature reading. It’s small size and price-point make it unmatched when it comes to environment monitoring sensors.
We developed the Active Power Sensor primarily for the data center and IT services markets, based on some initial requests and feedback from our clients. They were looking for a way to monitor the power status of individual servers in data centers, and they needed to set up the monitoring without powering down the mission-critical servers or unplugging them to install monitors at the PDU or outlet.
Once we began testing the Active Power Sensor, we realized that its uses far exceeded those in the data center segment. Nearly any AC-powered device drawing 100W or higher can be monitored with the initial Active Power Sensor release, and the uses on other potentially critical devices were readily apparent.
HVAC equipment is crucial to maintaining comfortable office environments, and it’s also critical to maintaining data center uptime. Nothing can take down servers like high temperatures or humidity extremes, both of which are kept in normal operating ranges by HVAC.
Knowing that your HVAC is up and running is a key step towards maintaining uptime. AVTECH sensors such as the Digital Temperature and Humidity Sensor help notify Room Alert users of rising temperatures and humidity changes that can lead to downtime, and are usually due to a malfunctioning HVAC. Adding an Active Power Sensor adds another layer of notification in the event the HVAC shuts down or loses power, and can help provide your organization with more time to address the issue before downtime becomes a possibility.
Monitoring the power status of HVAC pumps can also help prevent problems such as leaks or water damage. Many buildings have smaller pumps as shown here that can sometimes fail. If they are unable to pump out excess condensation, leaks and puddles can quickly build up. By using the Active Power Sensor to monitor those pumps you’ll receive immediate notification if they stop working and help prevent water damage.
Other environmental equipment can also be monitored, such as well pumps or sump pumps in both commercial and residential facilities. Knowing when your sump pump is turning on and off, along with a well pump, can help you keep an eye on both usage as well as potential problems that might cause damage and loss, or extraordinarily high water bills.
Beyond the examples above, there are plenty of other uses for the Active Power Sensor to monitor critical equipment in your facility.
Freezers that lose power can cause financial losses almost immediately, in both food storage as well as medical/chemical industries. The Active Power Sensor will notify you as soon as power is lost, allowing your organization to act immediately to save food, chemicals, medication, samples, or anything else that is crucial to your organization.
Internet routers and phone systems help keep your organization connected to customers and prospects. The Active Power Sensor can let you know if either lose power, and cut off your critical communications equipment.
